KN18 Choeur du Prologue [1918]

de Boris Godunow
[Mussorgsky-Arrangement]

Remarks: In August or September 1918 in Morges, Strawinsky arranged the choral prologue from Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov for solo piano arrangé pour mes enfants. The work was intended for his children. A neat copy of the arrangement, which remained unpublished during Strawinsky’s lifetime, is in the Paul Sacher Foundation, in Basel. Strawinsky transposed the piece from the original f minor to a minor. Boosey & Hawkes published the work in 1997 after Strawinsky’s death in an eleven-page anthology Stravinsky for Piano. A collection of miniatures and arrangements for piano solo and duet (plate number: 10631) as the third piece, which quietly removed things that were open to misinterpretation and presumably incorrect in Strawinsky’s autograph store in Rimsky-Korsakov’s procedure. Additionally inserted accidentals for dynamics, tempo and phrasing are indicated as not coming from Strawinsky. This piano piece was played publicly for the first time on 13th September 1982 at the Strawinsky festival in San Diego.
