Remarks: An improvisation theme for Marcel Dupré written in the first week of January 1952 in Hollywood for Marcel Dupré A Marcel Dupré ce thème de Choral / que je livre à son improvisation avec / le seul regret de ne pas être présent / pour l’entendre which was first published by Robert Craft (p. 251, I. volume of his book Selected Correspondance, edition 1982) was the result of an enquiry by the music critic of Le Figaro, Bernard Gavoty, writing under the cover name Clarendon. On 22 December 1951, Gavoty had asked Stravinsky through Nadia Boulanger for a theme that could be given to the organist of the parish church Saint-Sulpice as a theme for an improvisation. Stravinsky wrote a nine-bar melody and sent it to Nadia Boulanger with a letter dated 8th January 1952. The original is found in the Paul Sacher Stiftung, Basel.
