KN8 Nocturne / Valse brillante [1909]

(Chopin arrangements) – Nocturne / Valse brillante [Chopin-Bearbeitungen]

Remarks: Strawinsky orchestrated the Nocturne in A flat major (Op.32 Nr. 3) and the Valse Brillante in E-flat major (Op. 18) by Frederic Chopin in 1909 for the performance of the one-act ballet, Les Sylphides by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Aside from Strawinsky, Sokolow, Taneyev, Ljadow and Glazunov also took part in further orchestrations of Chopin’s works. The sparklingly presented ballet was premiered on 2nd June 1909 in the Parisian Théâtre du Châtelet. It was danced by Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsawina, Alexandra Baldina and Vaslav Njinsky. Staging and costumes were designed by Alexandre Benois, and the choreography was by Michael Fokine. Serge Grigoriev was director and it was conducted by Nikolai Tscherepnin. Both Strawinsky editions remained unpublished, but they brought him to the attention of Diaghilev and led to his part in the commission for the ballet intended for Ljadow, The Firebird.
